Dental implants treatment while taking bisphosphonates.

Writer: Dr Changjie GuoDr Changjie Guo

Bisphosphonates is a medication typically taken for osteoporosis, cancer-related conditions, and metabolic bone diseases. It affects bone turnover and can potentially compromise the healing of some dental surgery, like extractions and dental implants.

So, is it safe to have dental implants on bisphosphonates? It depends on doses, administration method, duration, age and other health factors. Bisphosphonates is not an absolute contraindication for dental implants, if the treatment is planned carefully.

This case is two implants placement in a 70-year-old patient receiving bisphosphonates injections.

Root canal treated bridge abutment failed

This x-ray showed that one of the dental bridge's abutments with root canal treatment had failed with abscess. Extraction was recommended by the endodontist.

dental bridge removal
Bridge was cut off and removed

The dental bridge was cut off and the sound abutment was kept. The root canal treated tooth was removed and ridge preservation was performed for the future implant.
