Fluorosis and teeth whitening

Writer's picture: Dr Changjie GuoDr Changjie Guo

Fluorosis is a dental condition from excessive fluoride ion exposure during the developmental stage. Affected teeth may have discoloration in the form of stains that are light yellowish to dark brown. Fluorosis can be a very difficult condition to treat because it does not respond well to topical tooth whitening. Compared to normal teeth whitening procedures, fluorosis teeth whitening is more complicated and takes longer treatment period.

This case showed an acceptable whitening result of fluorosis. The teeth were much whiter, which was big improvement. There were still some minor yellow patches. Porcelain veneers will be the ideal solution.
